The first potential rally car was
bought on ebay. Unfortunately, despite
fitting a roll cage to this car, rust in key
structural areas led us to decide to use this car
for spare parts and seek another donor car.
Another BMW E30 was purchased on
ebay and the build process started with removing
the interior of the car and fitting a Safety
Devices roll cage.
Next, the handling of the car was
modified by fitting Eibach springs, Bilstein
shocks (including strengthening plate),
polyurethane bushes and engine mounts, Mintex
brake pads, a limited slip diff and gravel tyres.
The next job was to add required
safety equipment to the car including plumbed in
fire extinguisher with nozzles mounted in the
engine bay, electrical cut out switches, hand held
fire extinguisher, racing seats, 4-point safety
harnesses, fuel tank guard and sump guard.
Having completed the first rally, we
then fitted a hydraulic handbrake and bias valve,
gear shift indicator, front strut brace and also
stripped out unwanted items from the engine bay
such as headlight washer motors and associated
wash bottle, alarm system, ABS pump and wiring,
and we moved the battery to the front of the car
and replaced it with smaller battery. We
also replaced the rear suspension top mounts,
strengthened the engine mounts (as we broke one on
the Mid-Wales rally) and strengthened the shell at
the base of the suspension turrets. The last purchase was a set of
Compomotive alloy wheels.
