Twyford 2WD Stages - 7th May 2006

Report

Twyford saw Steve and Wendy take their first ever class victory in the second round of the Hankook BMW Rear Wheel Drive Challenge. The weather was wet all day making tyre choice difficult as the stages were a mixture of concrete and gravel with water splashes and jumps. "We chose to stay on gravel tyres all day as some parts of the stages were very slippy and loose and I think that was the right decision as the Hankook tyres showed great grip on all surfaces" said Steve. Taking the class win by 52 seconds Steve and Wendy led the class from start to finish. "We thought we'd blown our chance of a win today when we hit a big bump which caused the fuel pump relay to pop-out bringing the car to a stand still midway through stage 2. We lost about a minute fixing the problem but fortunately our closest rival made a bad tyre choice and also lost around a minute. Going into the last stage we led by over a minute so just needed to keep the car on the road and we would be guaranteed the win. However, flat out in fourth gear we hit some standing water on the concrete which spun us off the track and into the bushes. Fortunately, the car was only slightly damaged and we were able to continue and take the class win". Adding to their silverware for the weekend, Wendy also won a trophy for 2nd overall female co-driver. "It was a great result for us although we didn't show the same pace we did at the previous rally - but we finished and in one piece!" added Wendy.
